An hour watching youtube videos to help ya get the hang of things, a few practice peice.and then post pics when you are done. 50-60bucks in planks and 10-15 in varnish/staining. and lay the planks as tight as you want, cut to fit the tape and should be easy. lay it on on concrete with something like chaulk line or tape probably best. use an acurate measurement of the general demensions of the bed. Cut Carboard templates to match the curve of the cab and tire wells. but every type of bed liner has it's pro and cons.as well as how long it lasts. Ya don't want wood more than 3/4 of an inch hick for sure, but less than half an inch may break and crack easily is you climb up in the bed and sit in it playing cards or stargazing like I do with my girl. level the ridges with perhaps rubber mats or bondo to have an even floor. Fence planking is a cheap option, I wouldn't try to make planks to fit inside the ridges we have on our El Camino bed floors. I figured I won't need rubber mats or deadener with the rubber-like lining under neath, I'll just have to drill a few holes to bolt is down if I want it permanent, or I could just make it a tight fit and drop it in when I do the shows on Saturday. around my town not alot of El Caminos run.much less look as clean as mine. I've got Ryno Line but think some planks would look awesome for the car shows my buddy wants me to start going to every week. I've been thinking about doing the same actually. I'm with jlCustomz, mainly becuase he DOES know what he is talking about and has the El Camino to prove it. Hopefully someone else will cime in with some affordable ideas they did themselves. I might even use cherry wood like on my dash & windowshelf, as seen in my photobucket pictures. One of my other thoughts was to adhere down wood laminate permanately & use thin carpet, such as speaker box carpet to cover when needed.I do some custom woodworking for a living, so I can do whatever I want myself whatever year I get time ,money ,& priority to do so. I would plane thinner & probably cut parts to lay flat in the bed profile.Probably would glue together into a few separate drop in pcs with something for sound deadening & padding on backside. I would stain & then spray with high solids automotive clearcoat. They would need to airdry for a while though. you can purchase 4" by 8' cypress fence planke around here for less than $5.00 each. One thought I,ve had here is some people have used cypress wood. I,ve been wanting to do something with the bed for years now, but won,t pay that kind of price for a KIT that requires you do most of the work, And I don,t care to add too much weight.
